My website is managed on WordPress, which has many helpful plug-ins. One of my favorite plug-ins is WordPress SEO by Yoast. It helps you in getting your post found on the Internet by sharing with you a page analysis. That is great! However, I always cringe when I look at the page analysis and I see this regularly regarding my posts:
“The copy scores 49 in the Flesch Reading Ease test, which is considered difficult to read. Try to make shorter sentences, using less difficult words to improve readability.”
My response is not to go back and redo my copy, but to think to myself that well done. Why should I make shorter sentences and use less difficult words? I love words and I love using language to the fullest. English can be a beautiful language.
How about we raise our standards? How about we use language to the fullest? Those are good ideas. At least in my mind. So guess what Flesch Reading East test? You can… well fill in the blank with an appropriate phrase that involves kissing.
Of course, this is not the first time I have ranted regarding the use of language. I did it five years ago here. And honestly, it will not be the last!
Am I the only person who thinks this? Gosh I hope not…

Amen! This is what’s wrong with the internet now, and why so many blogs just suck and are horribly written. I hope that eventually people tire of reading crap and search algorithms go back to favoring good content…but I’m sure it will never happen.
